Vitalik Buterin formulated a fundamental constraint: a blockchain can optimise for at most two of three properties simultaneously.
SECURITY
The network resists attacks. More security means higher cost of attack — which typically requires more nodes, more hardware, or more economic stake.
SCALABILITY
The network handles high transaction volume quickly and cheaply. More throughput typically requires centralising decision-making or hardware.
DECENTRALISATION
Nobody controls the network. More nodes means more decentralised — but coordination overhead slows everything down.
